JC - 3D Project Ideas

3D Studies

As discussed in class today and as outlined in the Junior Cert Project Paper, the next stage of the project is to design and make a 3D work based on your theme in one or any combination of the following techniques:

Modelling
Carving
Construction

The maximum size of your finished 3D must not exceed 80cm in its greatest dimension.

You must create a Preparatory Sheet: a selection of the relevant preparatory studies (drawings made in a variety of media, such as pencil, paint, charcoal, oil pastel, collage, etc) of your 3D work ideas, showing the origin and development of the work. Finished sketches should be mounted on a sheet of drawing paper 59x42cm (A2) maximum dimensions.

In the following video links from Specialist Crafts, they show you how to make a simple Mod Roc figure from a wire armature. This project is perfect for illustrating how armatures work, but also allows you to create human forms in various positions to use as models to sketch from. Below are some examples of past Junior Cert 3D projects. Start collecting materials such as wool, fabric, old clothes, string, cardboard, buttons, etc. A combination of all these items could be used along with paper mache or mod roc, depending on your design!

2nd Yr - Puppetry 'The Big Clean Up'

2nd Year's made some fantastic puppets, using a variety of materials, such as newspaper, paper mache, old clothes, wool, cardboard, bin bags, string, fake eyelashes etc! Working in groups of two or three, students were asked to create a string puppet based on the theme of ‘The Big Clean Up’. They began by brainstorming, then created an A2 Prep sheet of sketches, designs and ideas. Students also had to research the history of puppet making, and local parades such as the Galway Arts Festival Macnas parade. At the end of the project the puppets were filmed and came to life, Harlem Shake style!

Doodle 4 Google - PCA students selected as semi finalists!

Congratulations to 2nd Year Art students Serena Lacey and Michael Fitzgerald, for getting selected as one of the 300 semi-finalists for this year's Doodle 4 Google competition! Google employees selected the best 15 doodles from each of the five class groups, across each of the four regions in the Republic of Ireland: Ulster, Munster, Leinster, Connaught.

75 finalists will then be selected from the 300 semi finalists,by a panel of expert judges. The finalists names will be announced on 18th February, so wishing Serena and Michael the very best of luck, and congratulations again on their success so far.
