1st Yr - Postcard Design Project

First years students were introduced to the elements of art by selecting an object of their choice and creating four design boxes, exploring different types of media. Students began by drawing the object, and then created stencils of its silhouette in various sizes.
Students explored :
  • Line using markers,
  • Colours using oil pastels,
  • Tone using pencil
  • Shape and Pattern used coloured card.

The next stage was to introduce students to graphic design and lettering. Good lettering is a basic part of graphic design. Letters say a lot about a word. The size, style, weight, colour and position are all very important when trying to create a certain image. Using the name of their object students created four new design boxes of their choice.

The finished post card designs were a combination of all 8 design boxes. Using tracing paper students transferred their images, focusing on layout, positioning, layering, using imagination and creating unique colourful designs. Here are some of their finished postacrds ready to be sent and swapped to a group of 1st Years students who have also completed the same project, in Our Ladys College, Greenhills, Drogheda.

Check out the project swap, that was completed last year by students in CCS, Roscommon  http://ccsartdepartment.blogspot.ie/2012/03/1st-year-postcard-swap.html and OLC, Droghead lhttp://olcartdepartment.blogspot.ie/2011/12/1st-year-postcard-swap.html
